MAVIR Hungarian Electricity Transmission System Operator Privately Held Company Limited by Shares is a key player in the domestic energy sector. Its most important tasks include ensuring the uninterrupted, secure, and sustainable operation of the Hungarian electricity system, enabling equal access for system users, and the smooth operation and expansion of the electricity market and the supporting balancing group system.
According to current regulations, KAT balancing group member producers must forecast their next-day production with quarter-hourly schedules. Until now, MAVIR Plc., as the KAT balancing group responsible party, aggregated these quarter-hourly producer schedules, then after hourly averaging, sold these electricity quantities on the HUPX DAM (day-ahead) market.
Due to the KAT balancing group portfolio, the production schedule (submitted by KAT balancing group members) and the domestic trade schedule (containing energy transactions between the KAT balancing group and HUPX) significantly differ from each other on a quarter-hourly basis. The difference between hourly products and quarter-hourly schedules results in a significant regulation need, causing balancing energy and additional costs for the KAT balancing group and ultimately for the industrial consumers financing the KAT system.
In partnership with ODD Consulting Ltd., we further developed the system based on existing requirements. The development was carried out in multiple phases, the first milestone of which was the assessment and design phase. Due to the software's complexity and regulatory requirements, this phase represented a significant portion of the project.
In the new system, the KAT balancing group submitted an average of 380 MWh of offers per day on the HUPX ID market, of which an average of 8% was fulfilled. Based on the data, liquidity increased on the HUPX ID market, the number of transactions grew, and KAT offers will increasingly find counterparty demand.
